Hughes is currently a candidate for the Republican nomination for US Senate in Illinois.
Of the candidates seeking the nomination, Hughes has raised the second-most money. He has raised $132,000 to date and loaned his campaign another $250,000 of his own money. However, Hughes still considerably trails his opponent, US Congressman Mark Kirk, who has raised nearly $3 million so far.
A Chicago Tribune poll conducted in early December shows Hughes receiving 3% of the Republican primary vote
